FUNDING FOR SCOUTING IN SCHOOLS PROJECT

The Isle of Man Scout Association has been awarded £2,425 from Manx Lottery Trust’s Smaller Grants Programme to set up a Scout group in St Ninian’s High School.

The new Scout group will be set up for children and young people with additional needs, following the success of additional needs Scouting groups in Castle Rushen High School and Ballakermeen High School.

The Scout Association work with more than 700 young people aged six to 25 each week on the Island, by encouraging them to experience fun and adventure whilst also developing the skills they need to succeed.

In the new group at St Ninian’s, the organisation will be supporting around 25 young people with additional needs. The activities might include climbing, archery, fishing, fire lighting, gardening, cooking, first aid and much more.

Guy Thompson, Island Scout Commissioner, said: ‘We’ve seen huge benefits from the groups launched at the other schools, and by creating this new group we’ll be able to support even more young people, and introduce them to adventure. Thank you to the Manx Lottery Trust for awarding us this grant, which will allow us to continue to be even more inclusive and accessible.’

Sarah Kelly, Manx Lottery Trust Chairman, said: ‘The Scout Association do a great deal in encouraging young people to be active and experience new challenges, and this is a rewarding community project which we are very happy to support.’
