About Us

Helping the Island community and people most in need

We support the Island’s community by funding projects that address local needs and make a lasting difference. By distributing funding, we back initiatives that improve quality of life, build stronger communities and contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable Isle of Man. Our approach is guided by fairness, accessibility and a commitment to funding ideas with clear purpose and potential.

About Us MLT

Our Values

At Manx Lottery Trust, our work is guided by a set of core values that shape how we fund, support and operate. These values help ensure we distribute funding responsibly and make a real difference across the Isle of Man.
Together, they spell IMPACT, a reminder of what we aim to achieve through every grant we make.

I          Intelligent funding

We focus on both the impact of the projects we fund and the way funding is delivered, supporting strong outcomes and fair processes.

M       Making best use of resources

We manage funding carefully and efficiently to ensure it reaches the projects and people who need it most.

P       Programmes and fairness

We develop new funding programmes and make transparent, evidence-based decisions grounded in community needs.

A       Accessible support

We aim to be inclusive and approachable, helping organisations of all sizes, including those new to funding, access the support they need.

C       Community needs

We stay connected to the Island’s priorities by listening, learning and engaging with the people and organisations we serve.

T       Team and service

We invest in our team so they can provide consistent, high-quality support to applicants and partners at every stage.

Our People

Trustees

  • David Christian MBE JP
    Chair David Christian MBE JP

David joined Manx Lottery Trust as a Trustee in 2025, bringing a strong background in local government and community involvement. He has served as a Magistrate since 2002 and is a former governor of University College Isle of Man.

David is currently Chairman of the World Manx Association and has been recognised with an MBE in 2013 for his services to local government and the community of Douglas. In 2018, he was made a Freeman of the Borough of Douglas.

Outside of his trustee role, David enjoys reading, walking, attending local community events, and exploring the Island’s rich history.

  • Sophie Pearce
    Vice Chair Sophie Pearce

Sophie is an executive and leadership coach passionate about supporting leaders to achieve their professional goals. Like many others who give their time to charities, Sophie is motivated to give something back to society and to make a positive contribution to the Island and its people.

She particularly likes supporting the unglamorous projects that struggle to find funding elsewhere. Sophie has served as trustee since 2018, involved in HR and governance and has recently taken on the role of Vice-Chair.

  • Sarah Maltby
    Sarah Maltby

Sarah Maltby, MHK for Douglas South and passionate community advocate. A former Senior Education Support Officer, Sarah remains committed to supporting applications that encourage inclusive education, wellbeing and community facilities.

She is particularly keen to support projects that demonstrate strong partnerships between organisations and meaningful local community input. Sarah has served as a Trustee since 2021 and has fully embraced the role and responsibilities of the position.

  • Ian Begley
    Ian Begley

Ian joined Manx Lottery Trust as a Trustee in 2025 and brings extensive professional insight as Group Director and Managing Director of Accounting and Tax at Suntera Global. His leadership experience is a key asset as the Trust continues to grow and support funding opportunities across the Island.

Ian’s interests include golf, football, gym, and pilates. He is a qualified football referee and has held leadership roles in the local sports community, including former Chair of the Isle of Man Football Association and former Captain of Peel Golf Club.

  • Ralph Peake
    Ralph Peake

Business leader and sustainability champion. Former MHK and a key voice in the Island’s net zero ambitions

  • Helen Summerscales
    Helen Summerscales

Helen is Managing Director of Isle of Man Advertising & PR, a full-service communications agency specialising in graphic design, PR and website development. Since joining the Trustees in 2018, Helen has used her marketing expertise to bring plenty of fresh new ideas to the table and help the Trust continue to go from strength-to-strength.

Helen’s favourite aspect of being a Trustee is, without hesitation, helping to get community projects off the ground. Her top tip for applicants is to share a long-term plan, including how you intend to keep the momentum going after the initial project has been delivered.

Helen is proud to call the Isle of Man home and finds it difficult to pinpoint just one favourite spot. However, if she must, sitting on the rocks at Peel Castle watching the seals bask in the sunshine is definitely up there.
