MLT Backs Beach Buddies To Expand Into Primary Schools

Manx Lottery Trust has confirmed a grant to Beach Buddies to support the delivery of its Primary Schools Environmental Engagement Programme across the Isle of Man.

Awarded through the Community Awards Programme, the funding of £47,2000, will enable Beach Buddies to build on its long-standing relationships with Island schools and further develop its work engaging and inspiring primary-aged children around environmental responsibility.

The programme will reach primary schools across the Island and will include litter picking events, presentations exploring the impact of ocean pollution, interactive workshops, discussions and creative projects. A key aim of the project is to create a lasting impact by leaving each school with a dedicated Education Kit, containing the visual and practical materials needed to continue environmental learning beyond the life of the programme.

To ensure the project is delivered effectively and consistently, the funding will also support the short-term appointment of a specialist project lead, providing the capacity and expertise required to work closely with schools and educators.

Beach Buddies has worked with Isle of Man schools for many years and, in 2024, received a prestigious global environmental award in recognition of its education work.

Ian Pickering from Beach Buddies said: “Engaging children at primary school age is key to creating long-term behavioural change and a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility. This support from Manx Lottery Trust will allow us to expand our work with schools, deliver high-quality engagement across the Island, and leave a meaningful legacy that teachers and pupils can continue to build on.”

David Christian, Chairman of Manx Lottery Trust, added: “This project is a strong example of how education can be used to create lasting community and environmental benefit. By supporting Beach Buddies to extend its work in primary schools, this funding will help inspire young people, strengthen environmental awareness and embed positive practices that can have an impact for years to come.”

The Community Awards Programme supports Island-based organisations delivering projects that strengthen communities and create positive, long-term impact. Applications are considered throughout the year.
