Grant Supports Vital Track Renewal For Great Laxey Mine Railway
Manx Lottery Trust has confirmed a grant from the Dormant Assets Fund to the Great Laxey Mine Railway, supporting the renewal of track along the historic line to ensure its continued operation and connection to the local community.
The funding will enable the charity to purchase materials needed to re-lay the full length of the track, helping preserve one of the Isle of Man’s most significant heritage attractions for future generations. The project will also provide opportunities for volunteers to develop skills in traditional railway engineering and maintenance, while improving the safety and sustainability of the site.
The Dormant Assets Fund, which is distributed by Manx Lottery Trust, uses money from dormant bank and building society accounts to support projects that provide lasting community benefit across the Island.
Alasdair Campbell from the Great Laxey Mine Railway added: “This funding will enable us to purchase enough materials to relay the full length of the railway. This will allow us to continue operating for the foreseeable future and maintain our link to the community of Laxey and the Isle of Man. We’re very grateful to Manx Lottery Trust and all of our partners for their support.”
David Christian, Chairman of Manx Lottery Trust, said: “This project will help protect an important part of the Island’s industrial heritage. The Trustees are pleased to support an initiative through the Dormant Assets Fund that not only safeguards a valued attraction but also creates opportunities for learning and involvement.”
The Great Laxey Mine Railway has already secured funding contributions from the Rotary Club of the Isle of Man, the Laxey & Lonan Heritage Trust, Elizabeth Clucas Trust, the Reverend Awdry Trust, along with many private donors, and its own reserves, with the Dormant Assets Fund grant helping the organisation reach its overall target.
