Community Award Supports Manx Mencap’s Growing Activity Programme
Manx Mencap has received a £30,000 Community Award grant from Manx Lottery Trust to support its programme of activities for adults with learning disabilities across the Island.
The charity provides approximately 480 adults with activities each week, designed to improve physical fitness, encourage creative thinking and reduce social isolation. Demand for its services continues to grow, with activities becoming an important and much-valued part of the week for many members.
A large proportion of the programme takes place at Centre 21, where Manx Mencap offers activities three days a week throughout the year. These include social clubs, karaoke, arts and crafts, and bespoke sessions delivered by popular local entertainer Uncle Fester.
Weekly dance sessions are also provided with separate funding from the Isle of Man Arts Council.
The charity additionally organises monthly movie nights, themed events and visits from special guests, including miniature horses, reptiles and birds of prey. Members can also enjoy theatre trips, an annual visit to the circus, adventure activities and a Christmas celebration.
Debs Dixon of Manx Mencap said: “We are incredibly grateful to Manx Lottery Trust for this generous grant. Our activities give adults with learning disabilities opportunities to socialise, be creative, stay active and enjoy new experiences in a welcoming and supportive environment.
“The programme has become a real highlight for our members, and demand continues to grow. This funding will help us continue providing varied and engaging activities that make a genuine difference to people’s wellbeing and sense of connection.”
David Christian, Chairman of Manx Lottery Trust, added: “Manx Mencap provides an invaluable service, creating regular opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to build friendships, develop confidence and participate fully in their community.
“We are pleased to support its work through a Community Award grant and help ensure these important activities can continue to benefit members and their families across the Island.”
Manx Lottery Trust’s Community Awards programme offers grants of between £2,501 and £50,000 to support projects that improve local communities and the lives of people most in need. The programme funds a wide range of initiatives that build skills, improve health, protect the environment and bring people together.
