MUCH-USED ONCHAN FACILITY SET FOR REVAMP

One of the longest established scout groups in the Island is to receive a major boost in a move which will significantly improve a well-used community facility.

Manx Lottery Trust has awarded £40,000 to 2nd Onchan Scouts towards the refurbishment of and improvements to its headquarters in School Road.
The group recently obtained planning permission to carry out various works, including the creation of a new entrance foyer, the installation of a new toilet block and shower facilities, and improvements to ensure the premises are fully disabled-friendly.

Verona Addy, Group Secretary said: ‘The grant is such welcome news for everyone connected with 2nd Onchan Scouts but also the wider community in Onchan. The building is used five nights a week by our Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer Sections with a youth membership of around 120, but it is also utilised for a range of other activities such as dance classes, dog training, music classes and children's parties.’

Manx Lottery Trust has been delegated to distribute National Lottery money that has come from The National Lottery Community Fund. Sarah Kelly, chairman of Manx Lottery Trust, said: ‘It’s a real pleasure to be able to provide further support to The Scout Association; they do wonderful work and all the leaders are very committed to the work they do. This building is clearly an important facility for the local community so we are sure many people will appreciate and benefit from these improvements.’

The Scout Association works with more than 700 young people aged between six and 25 in the Island. It aims to develop key skills that will benefit them now, and in the future, as well as providing fun and adventure.
