Manx Lottery Trust, through its Community Awards Scheme, has helped fund Anagh Coar Primary School’s AstroTurf project.

Prior to the development the only space the children had to play on for outdoor sports, playtimes, lunchtimes and after school was concrete which resulted in numerous accidents over the years and reduced children’s confidence in playing sport.

The project will ensure the youngsters are able to partake in outdoor activities in all weathers, increasing participation and ability in a range of sports for the 120+ pupils within the school. It will also be available for use for extra-curricular clubs and, with no designated sports area within the Anagh Coar estate, will be of benefit to the area as a whole. Additionally, a safety surface has been installed around the school’s climbing wall to further encourage exercise on that equipment.

Headteacher of Anagh Coar Primary School, Rob Coole, said: ‘A combination of the generous support from Manx Lottery Trust, along with the children, parents and school supporters fundraising for the project through a range of events, has made this achievable and we’re hugely grateful. The AstroTurf surface will pay dividends for physical and mental health and well-being for the whole school and broader community.’

Sarah Kelly, Manx Lottery Trust Chairman, added: ‘The Trustees understood the wide range of benefits to the children, parents and broader community of having an all-weather surface. We also recognised the school community’s own fundraising efforts for this great project and we are delighted to support it.’
